Facts about
Located in the center of Houston, River Oaks has been around since the 1920s. Created by Will and Michael Hogg, the plan for the neighborhood was to provide an example of what could be done with intentional planning. As of the beginning of the 21st century, River Oaks is considered one of the most expensive and exclusive neighborhoods in Houston.
Some of the original homes still survive. A good example is the summer home of William Clayton, a prominent business leader. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the home is also an official City of Houston landmark.
Parks and esplanades were also part of the original design. Many of them remain today. The design called for the inclusion of oaks, various types of shrubs, azaleas, and other types of fauna.
In the years after World War II, River Oaks continued to grow in prestige, eventually becoming an enclave for the city’s wealthiest residents. It has retained that status into the 21st century and continues to remain a place for the wealthy as Houston continues to expand outward.
