Montrose is a neighborhood that’s found in the west-central area of Houston. Encompassing roughly 7.5 miles, the area is sometimes referred to as Neartown. Considered one of the cultural centers for the city, Montrose is known for being home to a number of avant-garde artists as well as for its hipster culture.
First established in 1911, Montrose served as a suburb for the wealthy. Over time, the makeup of the neighborhood became more diverse. Along with renovated and converted mansions, the area now boasts a number of bungalows and other types of housing. Several streets are still lined with trees that were planted during the early part of the 20th century.
The diversity within the neighborhood continued to expand as the area became more eclectic. Along with being home to musicians and other artists, it also began to attract members of the LGBTQ+ community during the 1980s. This led to Montrose being referred to as the “heart of Houston”, and the “most eclectic neighborhood in America.”
Gentrification began to arrive in Montrose toward the end of the 20th century, and continues today. The landscape now includes newer housing, renovated mansions, and upmarket eateries and boutiques. This has led to the area becoming less friendly for those with more modest means, while also attracting more attention from higher end clients and visitors.
