Facts about
Found mostly in Montgomery County, The Woodlands also has portions that extend into Harris County. Governed by The Woodlands Township, the area has an estimated population of 119,000. Located north of Houston, The Woodlands is known as both a bedroom community and the headquarters for a number of corporations.
More recently developed than other municipalities, The Woodlands is the result of an effort to create a town under the terms of the HUD Title VII program. As the brainchild of George P. Mitchell, the planning began in the 1960s, resulting in the official dedication of The Woodlands in 1974.
Originally developed under the auspices of The Woodlands Corporation, a series of acquisitions took place, over the next few decades. In 2011, the Howard Hughes Development Corporation acquired The Woodlands. While the original plan was for the area to eventually be annexed by Houston, support for this idea had waned. Today, there is a concentrated effort to eventually incorporate as a separate city, with that option available at least through 2057.
